Mind-Body Training Tools - Capnometry Module
A capnometer measures carbon dioxide in the breath and thus can detect (degree of) over-breathing - arguably the most significant stress related physiological indicator of all, since it strongly influences oxygen delivery to brain cells.
The capnometry biofeedback module offers three applications:
- Basic Capnometry - monitors the capnometer breath signal only and reliably calculates peak carbon dioxide per breath and breathing rate.
- Capnometry with EMG - in addition to the above, this application monitors muscle tension via EMG, which is useful in discriminating chest-based breathing from abdominal breathing. To run this app you need both capnometry + peripheral biofeedback modules.
- Capnometry with HRV - in addition to the basic capnometry breathing measures, this application monitors heart rate, and calculates heart rate coherence score in the same way as the HRV application (i.e. by relating the heart rate to breathing). To run this app you need both the capnometry + HRV modules.
- Capnometry with BVA - this application uses a photoplethysmograph device to measure heart rate and blood volume amplitude (BVA) which is a measure of Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) balance. (Requires both capnometry + HRV modules.)
A capnometer is also known as a capnograph.
